How to Play Horseshoes
Setup: Place a stake in the ground, typically around 40 feet (12m) away. Designate a pitching area behind the stake. You cannot throw (pitch) passed this line.
Equipment: Each player or team has two horseshoes, usually made of metal. The game can be played in singles (one player against another) or doubles (two players in a team against another team).
Pitching: Players take turns pitching their horseshoes towards the stake from behind a designated line, aiming to encircle it or land as close as possible. Players can throw underarm or overhand, standing within the pitcher’s box, typically 6 feet by 6 feet (1.82m X 1.82m).
Scoring: Points are awarded based on the horseshoes’ position in relation to the stake:
A “ringer” occurs when the horseshoe encircles the stake, scoring the highest points (usually 3 points).
A horseshoe leaning against the stake, within a specific distance, also scores points (usually 1 point).
Closest horseshoe to the stake earns points if no ringers are present.
Gameplay: Players or teams take turns pitching horseshoes until a predetermined score (commonly 21 points) is reached, or a specified number of innings have passed.
Winning: The player or team with the highest score at the end of the game wins. In a tournament setting, brackets or elimination rounds may determine the winner.
